New York State residents can register to vote online through the New York State Board of Elections at voterlookup.elections.ny.gov, by mail using a voter registration form, or in person at the Cattaraugus County Board of Elections or Department of Motor Vehicles offices. The deadline to register for an election is 25 days before Election Day. The state requires proof of identity and residence when registering in person, and voters must be U.S. Citizens, at least 18 years old by Election Day, and residents of Cattaraugus County for at least 30 days before the election. The Village of South Dayton holds municipal elections for the offices of Mayor and Village Trustees. Village elections in New York are typically held on the third Tuesday in March in odd-numbered years. The next village election will be held in March 2025, when voters will decide on local leadership. For the November 3, 2026 general election, South Dayton voters will decide several important races. New York will hold gubernatorial elections in 2026, with the Governor's office on the ballot along with other statewide offices including Attorney General and Comptroller. The New York State Senate and Assembly seats representing the area (currently in the 57th Senate District and 148th Assembly District) will be on the ballot, as all state legislative seats are up every two years. Cattaraugus County offices including County Legislature seats, Sheriff (four-year term), County Clerk, and District Attorney may also appear on the 2026 ballot depending on term expiration schedules. Precinct-level results for the village's voting districts are published by the Cattaraugus County Board of Elections after certification and are available for public inspection.
