Stephens County is located in the north-central region of Texas and is part of the Big Country region. The county seat is Breckenridge, and the largest city is Graham. The county is part of the Abilene, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The county is governed by a five-member Commissioners Court, which is composed of the county judge and four commissioners. The county judge is elected county-wide, while the four commissioners are elected by single-member districts.

The county is home to Lake Breckenridge, which was created in 1965 by damming the Clear Fork of the Brazos River.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 910 square miles, of which 904 square miles is land and 5.9 square miles is water.
