Voter registration must be postmarked 30 days before an election. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens, Texas residents, at least 18 years old by election day, and not convicted felons (unless sentence completed) or declared mentally incapacitated by a court. Valid forms of ID include Texas driver's license, Texas personal ID, election identification certificate, U.S. Passport, military ID, or citizenship certificate with photo. Since the community is unincorporated with no municipal government, there are no mayoral or city council elections; residents vote in Hays County Commissioner elections (the area is in Commissioner Precinct 3), county-wide offices, state legislative races, and federal elections. Local voters can find their assigned polling place by entering their address at the Texas Secretary of State website www.texas.gov/election or by contacting the Elections office. Early voting is available at multiple locations including the Hays County Government Center in San Marcos, typically 17 days before election day. Texas requires an excuse for mail-in voting: voters must be 65 or older, disabled, out of the county during early voting and election day, or confined in jail. Applications for mail-in ballots are available at www.hayscountytx.com/elections and must be received by the Hays County elections office (not postmarked) by 11 days before election day. Texas public records law makes voter registration lists available for purchase for political purposes, and election results by precinct are published online. Campaign finance reports for county and local candidates are filed with the Hays County Clerk and are public record; state candidates file with the Texas Ethics Commission at www.ethics.state.tx.us. Candidate applications and ballot measure information are available through the Elections Administrator's office beginning several months before each election.
