Calhoun County is located in the southeastern part of Texas and is part of the Victoria, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Port Lavaca. The county has a total area of 573 square miles, with 569 square miles of land and 4 square miles of water.

Calhoun County is governed by a four-member Commissioners Court, with each member representing one of the four precincts in the county. The county judge is the presiding officer of the court, and is elected county-wide. The other members of the court are the commissioners for each precinct, who are elected by the voters of their respective precincts.

The county is home to a number of state parks, including Goose Island State Park, Magnolia Beach State Park, and Matagorda Island State Park. The county is also home to the Calhoun County Fair, which takes place every April.
