Alberta's trial courts are the Court of King's Bench (superior court) and the Alberta Court of Justice, with appeals heard by the Court of Appeal of Alberta. Written decisions from all three are free on CanLII's Alberta collection (linked below); case files are requested from the courthouse that heard the matter.

Vital Records: Restricted, With a Genealogy Door

Birth, death, marriage, and legal-change-of-name certificates are issued through Alberta's Vital Statistics program via authorized registry agents. Eligibility is restricted to the person named and close family. Historical registrations move to the Provincial Archives of Alberta for genealogy research.

Land, Property & Business Records

Land ownership is searchable through Alberta's land titles system (SPIN2), and property assessments through the municipal assessment system, both linked below. Corporate searches for Alberta companies run through registry agents connected to the province's corporate registry.

Records Nobody Publishes

Criminal records are not public anywhere in Canada — checks go through police services with the subject’s consent. For unpublished government records, Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act gives anyone the right to file an access request with a provincial or municipal body, the provincial cousin of the federal ATIP process described in our Canada Public Records guide.
