Registration must be completed at least 15 days before an election, though the state also offers conditional voter registration allowing eligible citizens to register and vote up through Election Day at designated locations. Valid forms of identification or the last four digits of a Social Security number are required. As an unincorporated community, the area does not hold municipal elections for mayor or city council, since there is no city government. Residents vote in county, state, and federal elections, as well as elections for special districts such as the North Tahoe Public Utility District. The Placer County Board of Supervisors District 5 represents the North Lake Tahoe area, with supervisor elections held on a rotating basis for four-year terms. In the November 2024 presidential election, Placer County reported approximately 72% voter turnout among its roughly 280,000 registered voters, with strong participation across both the Auburn area and mountain communities. Election results are available on the county Elections website by precinct. On November 3, 2026, voters will decide several important races. While California does not have a U.S. Senate seat up in 2026, residents will elect a Governor (incumbent Gavin Newsom is term-limited), Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, and other statewide constitutional officers. All 80 State Assembly seats and 20 of the 40 State Senate seats will be contested. Locally, voters will elect county offices including Sheriff-Coroner, District Attorney, Assessor, and potentially County Supervisors depending on the district rotation. Special district elections may include North Tahoe Public Utility District board members. Local ballot measures may address taxation, land use, or infrastructure issues. To request an absentee or mail ballot in California, voters are automatically sent mail ballots if registered; additional replacement ballots can be requested by contacting the Elections Office by phone, in writing, or through the online portal. California allows any registered voter to vote by mail without providing a reason. The California Public Records Act (Government Code § 6250 et seq.) provides public access to many election records. Voter registration lists are available for purchase by candidates and committees for election purposes. Campaign finance disclosure statements (Form 460, 497, etc.) filed by candidates and committees are public records available through the county Elections Office and online at the California Secretary of State's Cal-Access database (http://cal-access.sos.ca.gov/). Candidate statements, nomination papers, and precinct-level election results are also public records. Individual voter history (which elections a person voted in, but not how they voted) is public, while actual ballot choices are confidential.
