Dallam County is governed by a Commissioners Court, which consists of four commissioners elected from single-member districts and a county judge elected at-large. The county judge presides over the Commissioners Court and is the chief administrator of the county.

The county is served by the Dalhart Independent School District. The county is also home to the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Dalhart.

The economy of Dallam County is largely based on agriculture, with wheat, corn, and sorghum being the primary crops. Cattle and sheep are also raised in the county. Oil and gas production is also an important part of the economy.
