Residents can register to vote online through the California Secretary of State's website at registertovote.ca.gov, using a driver's license or state ID number to complete the process electronically. California's same-day conditional voter registration allows people to register and vote provisionally at vote centers and county elections offices through Election Day itself, though standard registration must be completed 15 days before an election for voters to receive a ballot by mail. Eligibility requirements include U.S. Citizenship, California residency, being at least 18 years old by Election Day, and not currently serving time in prison or on parole for a felony conviction. As an unincorporated community, Freedom holds no municipal elections for mayor or city council since no city government exists. Residents instead vote in county, state, and federal elections, along with special district races covering school boards and water districts. A five-member Board of Supervisors governs Santa Cruz County, elected by district. Freedom falls within Supervisorial District 1, which covers south county including Watsonville and surrounding unincorporated areas. Supervisors serve four-year terms, with elections scheduled for November of even-numbered years on a staggered rotation. Residents can locate their assigned polling place and vote center by visiting www.votescount.com and using the online lookup tool, or by checking the sample ballot mailed before each election. The state has shifted to a vote center model, allowing voters to cast ballots at any vote center in Santa Cruz County during early voting or on Election Day, supplementing traditional precinct polling places. The county leans strongly Democratic in most elections, though participation remains high across party lines. Public election records in California include voter registration lists (with some personal information redacted for privacy), campaign finance reports filed by candidates and committees (available through the county Elections Department and the California Fair Political Practices Commission at www.fppc.ca.gov), candidate statements and filings, precinct-level election results, and ballot measure information. Individual voter history, showing which elections a person voted in, but not how they voted, is considered public record and can be purchased from the county for political and research purposes. California's gubernatorial election will determine the state's governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and other constitutional officers. All 80 seats in the California State Assembly and 20 of the 40 State Senate seats will appear on the ballot, including the local Assembly and Senate districts covering the area.
