Gilchrist County is located in north-central Florida. It was created in 1925 from a portion of Alachua County. The county seat is Trenton.

The county government is organized into three main departments: the Board of County Commissioners, the County Clerk, and the Property Appraiser. The Board of County Commissioners is responsible for establishing county ordinances, levying taxes, and approving the annual budget. The County Clerk is responsible for recording official county documents and providing services to the public. The Property Appraiser is responsible for assessing real estate and other taxable property for ad valorem taxation.

The economy of Gilchrist County is largely based on agriculture. The county is a major producer of watermelons and other vegetables. Livestock and timber are also important elements of the economy.

The county is home to several recreation areas and parks, including Hart Springs, Manatee Springs State Park, and the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail.

Gilchrist County is served by the Gilchrist County School District. There are seven public schools in the district, including Trenton Elementary, Bell High School, and Trenton Middle/High School.
