Hancock County is located in the state of Maine, in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 54,418. The county seat is Ellsworth.
Hancock County is part of the Ellsworth, ME Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is the second-largest county in Maine by total area.
1. The Battle of Hampden: On June 16, 1814, the Battle of Hampden was fought in Hancock County, Maine. The battle was part of the War of 1812 and was fought between British forces and American militia. The British were ultimately victorious, but the American militia put up a strong fight.
2. The Great Fire of 1866: On October 8, 1866, a devastating fire swept through the towns of Ellsworth, Bucksport, and Castine in Hancock County, Maine. The fire destroyed over 500 buildings and caused an estimated $2 million in damages.
3. The Founding of Bar Harbor: In 1763, the town of Bar Harbor was founded in Hancock County, Maine. The town quickly became a popular summer destination for wealthy families from the East Coast.
4. The Founding of Acadia National Park: In 1916, the first national park east of the Mississippi River was established in Hancock County, Maine. The park, now known as Acadia National Park, is home to some of the most stunning scenery in the United States.
