Middlesex County is located in the central part of New Jersey and is the second most populous county in the state. The county seat is New Brunswick.

The county is governed by a Board of Chosen Freeholders, which consists of seven members elected at-large to serve three-year terms of office on a staggered basis, with either two or three seats up for election each year.

The county is home to a number of major employers, including Rutgers University, and the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The county is also home to a number of parks and recreational areas, including the Middlesex County Greenway, the Middlesex County Park System, and the Rutgers Gardens.

The county has a total area of 322 square miles, of which 316 square miles is land and 6.2 square miles is water.
