Mississippi Inmate Search

Mississippi holds state prisoners under the Mississippi Department of Corrections at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman, the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Pearl, which also holds women, and the South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville, plus private prisons at Wilkinson County and East Mississippi, the Marshall County Correctional Facility, which the state took back from a private operator in 2021, county run regional correctional facilities that house state inmates, and community work centers. County jails run by the 82 sheriffs hold pretrial detainees and misdemeanor sentences.

The MDOC Inmate Search is the state lookup. It runs on the MDOC number or the name and covers state inmates wherever they are housed, including regional facilities and county jails holding them.

The MDOC Inmate Search returns the MDOC number, name, race and sex, height and weight, date of birth, the current location, the sentence, the tentative release date and each offense with the sentencing county, sentence length and date. A search by last name works statewide, and the MDOC number is printed on all correspondence and on the record itself. People on parole or probation are not shown, only people in custody.

The Hinds County Sheriff's Raymond Detention Center serves Jackson, and the Harrison County Adult Detention Center in Gulfport, the Jackson County Adult Detention Center in Pascagoula, the DeSoto County jail in Hernando, the Rankin County jail in Brandon, the Madison County Detention Center in Canton and the Lee County jail in Tupelo publish rosters with charges and bond. Jackson Police book into the Hinds County jail, and the Mississippi Highway Patrol books into the county jail of the arrest.

The Mississippi Public Records Act, Miss. Code section 25-61-1 and following, makes the custody record public, and the MDOC posts the offenses, sentence and tentative release date. Sheriffs publish booking photos with their rosters. Medical and mental health records, the pre-sentence investigation, classification and disciplinary files and Parole Board case files are exempt. Criminal history reports from the Department of Public Safety are available to the subject and to employers with a statutory basis, not to the general public by name.

The Mississippi Parole Board hears eligible prisoners, and a 2021 law widened eligibility for many nonviolent and some violent offenses after a set portion of the sentence. The MDOC Community Corrections Division supervises parolees and felony probationers from field offices statewide, and house arrest under electronic monitoring is used as an alternative for some sentences. The judgment sits with the circuit clerk of the convicting county, and many circuit clerks post case indexes online.

If the MDOC search returns nothing, check the county jail roster for the county of arrest, starting with Hinds, Harrison, Jackson, DeSoto or Rankin, since pending cases and misdemeanor sentences stay in the jail. A parolee or probationer is supervised by MDOC Community Corrections and is not listed. Check the circuit clerk for the case, the federal Bureau of Prisons locator for a federal case and VINELink for a recent release.
