Nebraska prison inmates are held by the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services at the Nebraska State Penitentiary and the Reception and Treatment Center in Lincoln, the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution, the Lincoln and Omaha Correctional Centers, the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women in York, the Work Ethic Camp in McCook and community corrections centers in Lincoln and Omaha. County jails run by the 93 sheriffs, and the Douglas County Department of Corrections in Omaha, hold pretrial detainees and sentences of up to a year.

The Nebraska Inmate Locator returns the inmate number, name, race and sex, date of birth, the facility, the sentence begin date, the parole eligibility date, the tentative release date and each offense with the county, the sentence and the date sentenced. Nebraska applies good time to both dates, so the record shows the earliest possible parole date and the earliest possible discharge date after credits. People on parole are listed separately by the Board of Parole, and probationers are in court records.

The Douglas County Department of Corrections runs the jail in Omaha and posts an inmate search with the booking date, charges and bond. The Lancaster County jail in Lincoln, the Sarpy County jail in Papillion, the Hall County jail in Grand Island, the Buffalo County jail in Kearney, the Dodge County jail in Fremont and the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center in Gering publish rosters as well. Omaha Police and Lincoln Police book into the county jail, and the Nebraska State Patrol books into the county jail of the arrest.

The Nebraska Public Records Statutes, Neb. Rev. Stat. section 84-712 and following, make the custody record public, and the locator posts offenses, sentences and release dates. The Department does not publish photographs in the locator. Sheriffs release booking photos with their rosters. Medical and mental health records, the pre-sentence investigation, classification and disciplinary files and Board of Parole case files are exempt. The Nebraska State Patrol sells a name based criminal history to anyone online for a fee, and the state courts' JUSTICE case search charges per search.

The Nebraska Board of Parole hears every eligible prisoner at the parole eligibility date, posts its hearing schedule and, since 2018, supervises parolees through its own Division of Parole Supervision rather than through the prison system. Probation is run by the state courts' Office of Probation Administration, so probationers appear in court records. Nebraska's mandatory discharge date releases the person without supervision when parole was never granted. The judgment sits with the clerk of the district court of the convicting county.
