Nebraska State Court Structure:

The Nebraska county courts hear cases involving tort, contract, real property rights ($0/$15,000) and small claims cases up to $2,100. The Nebraska county courts have exclusive estate jurisdiction and adoption jurisdiction. Additionally, the county courts have jurisdiction over misdemeanors, DWI/DUIs, juvenile cases, and traffic/other violations. They perform preliminary hearings. The Nebraska workers compensation court has limited jurisdiction involving only workers compensation disputes. The Nebraska separate juvenile court hears juvenile matters. The Nebraska district court has jurisdiction over tort, contract, real property rights, civil appeals, and miscellaneous civil matters. The Nebraska district court has exclusive jurisdiction over mental health jurisdiction and domestic relations (except adoption). The district court has jurisdiction over misdemeanors, DWI/DUIs, and exclusive felony, criminal appeals, and miscellaneous criminal jurisdiction. The Nebraska court of appeals has mandatory jurisdiction over civil, criminal, administrative agency, juvenile, disciplinary, and original proceeding cases. It has no discretionary jurisdiction. The Nebraska supreme court has mandatory jurisdiction over civil, capital, criminal, criminal disciplinary, and all other matters.
