Nelson County is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is part of the Charlottesville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Its county seat is Lovingston.

Nelson County is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors, elected from five magisterial districts. The Board of Supervisors is responsible for setting policy and enacting laws for the county. The county is also served by a constitutional officer, the Sheriff, and a Commonwealth's Attorney.

Nelson County is home to the Blue Ridge Parkway and the George Washington National Forest. It also boasts a variety of wineries, breweries, and orchards, as well as several historic sites.
