Northumberland County is located in north-central Pennsylvania and is part of the Susquehanna Valley. The county was formed in 1772. Northumberland County is home to a population of 90,476, according to the 2020 United States Census. The county has a total area of 503 square miles. Its county seat is Sunbury.

Northumberland County government consists of a board of county commissioners, elected by the county populace, to serve a four year term. The commissioners have full administrative and legislative authority to manage county business. Other county officials include a treasurer, recorder of deeds, prothonotary, sheriff, register and recorder, and district attorney, all of whom are elected to serve four year terms.

The Northumberland County economy is driven primarily by manufacturing and service sectors, with the county being home to several large employers. Retail and tourism are also important contributors to the local economy. The county has several higher education institutions, including Bloomsburg University, Central Susquehanna Career and Technology Center and Dickinson School of Law.
