County profile
Sheriff & Law Enforcement. Powell County Sheriff's Office is responsible for maintaining law and order in the unincorporated areas of Powell County.
Police Departments. In addition to Powell County Sheriff's Office, law enforcement in Powell County is supported by municipal police departments, including the Deer Lodge Police Department. These agencies work within their respective jurisdictions, with the Sheriff's Office covering rural areas and the city police focusing on urban centers.
Law Enforcement & Arrests. Powell County Sheriff's Office, headquartered at 409 Missouri Avenue in Deer Lodge, Montana 59722, is the primary law enforcement agency for Powell County's unincorporated areas and provides detention services. Powell County Detention Center, operated by the Sheriff's Office, houses inmates and provides booking information through direct contact with the facility. Inmate rosters and booking information can be obtained by calling the detention center or visiting the Sheriff's Office in person, as Powell County does not currently maintain a publicly accessible online inmate search system. Arrest records and booking logs are public records under Montana's Constitutional Right to Know provisions (Article II, Section 9 of the Montana Constitution) and the public records statute (Montana Code Annotated § 2-6-102). The City of Deer Lodge does not operate a separate municipal police department; law enforcement services are provided through the Sheriff's Office.
Arrest Records. Arrest records in Powell County are maintained by Powell County Sheriff's Office.
Jail & Inmate Records. Inmate lookup services are available through the Sheriff's Office, allowing the public to access information about current detainees.
Mugshots & Booking Photos. Mugshots in Powell County are taken and retained by Powell County Sheriff's Office during the booking process. These booking photos are part of the public record and can be accessed through the Sheriff's Office, either in person or via their official website.

The mine records hold 416 named mine sites inside the county, 337 of them worked out or abandoned; the old survey maps add 509 holes drawn inside the county, 129 of them shafts or tunnels. The minerals the records name are Gold; Pumice; Phosphorus-Phosphates.
A point in either file is a location, not a property line: the sheet shows the opening on the surface, not the rooms under it. The record that shows what runs under a parcel is the mine map. Booking photos are kept by the agency that made the arrest, such as the Powell County Sheriff or a city police department in Powell County. Ask that agency for its record. Montana law (MCA 44-5-103) lists initial arrest records, including booking photographs, as public criminal justice information, and MCA 44-5-301 places no restrictions on its dissemination.

Search the Montana Sexual or Violent Offender Registry (Montana Department of Justice), or every state at once on the National Sex Offender Public Website run by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Register with the county election administrator (the county election office) or through the Montana Secretary of State. Montana has no online voter registration. Regular registration closes 30 days before the election; after that, late registration in person with the county election administrator is available (MCA 13-2-304).
Deeds and other recorded land documents in Powell County are kept by the Powell County Clerk and Recorder. Property values are set by the Montana Department of Revenue, and tax bills come from the county treasurer. Source: official state page.
