The Elections Administrator is the primary resource for voter registration, polling place information, sample ballots, election dates, and candidate details. Texas residents can register to vote online through the Texas Secretary of State's website at www.votetexas.gov, or by submitting a paper voter registration application available from the county Elections office, libraries, and various state agencies. Applications must be postmarked or submitted at least 30 days before an election for the applicant to be eligible to vote in that contest. Poynor Independent School District also holds elections for school board trustees, typically in May of odd-numbered years; these elections are administered by Henderson County Elections and prove critical for local governance of the district serving the community. Residents can find their assigned polling place by visiting the Texas Secretary of State's polling place lookup tool at www.votetexas.gov or by contacting the Henderson County Elections office. Polling locations are assigned based on the voter's residential address and precinct. The county typically provides multiple early voting locations in Athens and potentially other areas during the early voting period, which runs from the 17th day through the 4th day before election day for most elections. Election day polling places are precinct-specific. Under Texas public information law, voter registration information is public record with limited personal information redacted. The Elections office maintains precinct-level election results which are public after certification. Campaign finance reports for county and local candidates are filed with the Henderson County Clerk and are public record, while state-level campaign finance data is available through the Texas Ethics Commission at www.ethics.state.tx.us. In the November 2024 general election, Henderson County reported voter turnout of approximately 58-62% of registered voters, consistent with Henderson County's typical turnout in presidential election years. The county has historically leaned strongly Republican in recent elections, with Republican candidates typically winning county races by wide margins. Looking ahead to the November 3, 2026 general election, Poynor and Henderson County voters will decide several significant races. Texas voters will elect a Governor (Governor Greg Abbott's current term expires in January 2027), Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and other statewide executive and judicial offices. All 150 Texas House of Representatives seats will be on the ballot, with Poynor falling within a specific district (likely District 5 or 11, depending on redistricting). Texas will also elect one U.S. Senator in 2026, the seat currently held by John Cornyn, whose term expires in January 2027. Texas's U.S. House delegation seats will also be on the ballot.
