Stockholm voters are served by the Grant County Auditor, who serves as Grant County's chief election official. The Grant County Auditor's Office is located at 210 East 5th Avenue, Milbank, SD 57252, and can be reached at (605) 432-5516. This office handles all aspects of voter registration, absentee voting, polling place assignments, ballot preparation, and election administration for the town and all of Grant County. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with extended hours available before elections.
Residents can register to vote online through the South Dakota Secretary of State's website at sdsos.gov/elections-voting/voting/register-to-vote.aspx. South Dakota offers same-day voter registration, allowing eligible residents to register and vote on Election Day by providing proof of residence such as a driver's license, utility bill, or other documentation showing a current Grant County address. Voters must be U.S. Citizens, at least 18 years old by Election Day, and South Dakota residents. Online registration requires a South Dakota driver's license or non-driver ID; the deadline for online and mail registration is 15 days before an election, but in-person registration continues through Election Day. Stockholm has no municipal government and therefore holds no city elections for mayor, city council, or local ballot measures. All elections affecting local residents are conducted at the county, state, and federal levels. Grant County holds elections for County Commission seats, Sheriff, Auditor, Register of Deeds, State's Attorney, Treasurer, and other constitutional offices. Residents also vote for South Dakota Governor and Lieutenant Governor (four-year terms), state legislative seats in District 3 (one Senate seat and two House seats), and federal offices including U.S. House of Representatives (South Dakota At-Large seat) and U.S. Senate. Voters cast ballots at their assigned precinct polling place, which can be located using the polling place finder at sdsos.gov/elections-voting/voting/polling-place-information.aspx by entering a home address. Grant County typically operates several consolidated polling locations on Election Day, with area voters generally assigned to vote in Milbank or at a nearby rural community center. Polls are open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Mountain Time on Election Day (Grant County observes Central Time, so polls are open 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Central Time). At the federal level, South Dakota's At-Large U.S. House seat will be contested. The U.S. Grant County will also elect various county offices including County Commission seats, and possibly other constitutional offices depending on term expirations. Voters should check with the Grant County Auditor in fall 2026 for a complete sample ballot and candidate information. South Dakota election records that are public include voter registration lists (available for purchase for lawful election purposes under SDCL 12-4-47), campaign finance reports filed with the Secretary of State (searchable at sdsos.gov), candidate filings and petitions, precinct-level election results, and absentee ballot statistics. Individual voter history (which elections a person voted in, but not how they voted) is public record. Actual marked ballots are secret and never made public. Absentee voting is available to all South Dakota voters without requiring an excuse. Residents can request an absentee ballot by contacting the Grant County Auditor at (605) 432-5516 or downloading an application at sdsos.gov. Absentee ballot applications must be received by 5:00 PM the day before the election. Completed absentee ballots must be returned by 7:00 PM on Election Day either by mail (postmark deadline does not apply; ballot must be received by Election Day), in person at the Auditor's office, or at the polling place. South Dakota does not have universal mail voting; most voters cast ballots in person on Election Day, though absentee voting has increased in recent elections.
