Sussex County is located in the northwest corner of New Jersey and is bordered by Warren County to the north, Morris County to the east, Passaic County to the south, and Pike County, Pennsylvania to the west. As of the 2019 Census estimate, the county's population was 145,800, making it the 17th-most populous of the state's 21 counties. The county seat is Newton.

The Board of Chosen Freeholders is the governing body of the county and is composed of seven members who are elected at-large to serve three-year terms of office on a staggered basis.
