Walker County is governed by a four-member Commissioners Court, which is composed of the County Judge and four County Commissioners. The County Judge is the presiding officer of the Commissioners Court and is elected county-wide. The four County Commissioners are elected by the voters of each of four precincts.

Walker County is located in East Texas and is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The county seat is Huntsville.

The county is home to the Sam Houston National Forest which offers camping, hiking, fishing, and other outdoor activities.

Walker County is also home to Sam Houston State University, the third oldest public university in Texas.
