The County of Atlantic is the southernmost county in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The county seat is Mays Landing. As of the 2019 Census estimate, the county's population was 272,827, making it the 15th-most populous of the state's 21 counties.
Atlantic County is governed by a Board of Chosen Freeholders consisting of five members, elected on an at-large basis in partisan elections and serving staggered three-year terms of office, with either one or two seats up for election each year as part of the November general election. At an annual reorganization meeting held in the beginning of January, the freeholders select one of their members to serve as Freeholder Director and another as Deputy Freeholder Director.
