Voter registration in New Mexico can be completed online at https://portal.sos.state.nm.us/OVR/, by mailing a registration form, or in person at the Valencia County Clerk's office. The state requires registration at least 28 days before any election. Eligible voters must be U.S. Citizens, at least 18 by election day, and residents of both New Mexico and Valencia County. Registration requires a New Mexico driver's license, state ID number, or the last four digits of a Social Security number. New Mexico doesn't require photo ID at the polls, though first-time voters who registered by mail may need to show identification their first time voting. Because Bosque is unincorporated, there are no municipal elections for mayor or city council. Instead, residents cast ballots for Valencia County Commission seats (five commissioners elected by district), county constitutional officers including Sheriff, County Clerk, Treasurer, Assessor, and Probate Judge, state legislative seats covering the county, and state and federal offices. Polling locations for local voters can be found through the New Mexico Voter View portal at https://voterportal.servis.sos.state.nm.us/ by entering your name and date of birth. Early voting typically begins three weeks before election day at designated sites including the Valencia County Clerk's Office. New Mexico's public records law grants broad access to election information. Voter registration lists are available for purchase for political purposes from the Valencia County Clerk. Campaign finance reports for candidates are searchable through the New Mexico Secretary of State's Campaign Finance Information System at https://www.cfis.state.nm.us/. Candidate filings, ballot measures, precinct-level results, and turnout statistics are all public records available from the Valencia County Clerk or Secretary of State. In the November 2024 general election, Valencia County saw approximately 48% voter turnout with roughly 31,000 ballots cast from approximately 64,000 registered voters. Looking toward the November 3, 2026 general election, voters in the area will decide several key races. New Mexico will hold elections for all three U.S. House seats (Valencia County falls primarily in District 2), all 70 state House of Representatives seats (two-year terms), and 21 of 42 state Senate seats (staggered four-year terms). County offices on the ballot in 2026 include County Commission seats for Districts 2 and 4 (four-year terms), and potentially various county constitutional offices depending on the cycle. No statewide offices such as Governor or U.S. Senate are scheduled for 2026, as the gubernatorial race occurred in 2022 and U.S. Senate seats are contested in 2024 and 2028. Local school board positions and special district elections may also appear on ballots. New Mexico offers absentee voting by mail to any registered voter without requiring an excuse. Voters can request an application from the Valencia County Clerk or download one from the Valencia County website. Completed applications must be submitted by the Thursday before election day for regular mail ballots, or as late as the day before for in-person absentee voting at the Clerk's office. Ballots must be returned by 7:00 PM on election day either by mail (the ballot must be received, not just postmarked), in person at the Clerk's office, or at designated drop boxes.
