Cumberland County is located in the south-central part of Virginia and is part of the Richmond, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Cumberland. The county was established in 1749 from Goochland County.

The county government is led by a five-member Board of Supervisors, elected from single-member districts. The board is responsible for setting policy and budgeting for the county. The county is also served by a constitutional officer, the Sheriff, and a Commonwealth's Attorney.

The county is served by the Cumberland County Public Schools system. The county is also home to the University of Virginia's College at Wise.
