Dewey County is located in the southwestern part of South Dakota and is part of the Great Plains region. The county was established in 1883 and is named after George Dewey, a naval hero of the Spanish-American War. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,301. The county seat is Timber Lake.
The county government is organized into three branches: executive, legislative, and judicial. The executive branch is headed by the County Commission, which consists of three commissioners elected by the voters of the county. The legislative branch is the County Council, which consists of five members elected by the voters of the county. The judicial branch is the Circuit Court, which is presided over by a judge appointed by the Governor of South Dakota.
