Haakon County is located in the southwestern part of South Dakota. It is bordered by Jackson County to the north, Pennington County to the east, Fall River County to the south, and Custer County to the west. The county seat is Philip, and the largest city is Philip. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 2,073.
The county was created in 1914 and named for Haakon VII, the first king of Norway.
