Washington DC Inmate Search at a Glance
The District of Columbia works unlike any state. The DC Department of Corrections runs the DC Jail and the Correctional Treatment Facility on the same campus in Southeast Washington, holding pretrial detainees, people serving misdemeanor sentences and felons waiting for transfer. Since the 1997 Revitalization Act, people convicted of District felonies serve their sentence in the federal Bureau of Prisons, in facilities anywhere in the country, and supervision after release is handled by a federal agency, the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency.
So a DC search has two halves: the DC DOC inmate locator and VINELink for the jail, and the Bureau of Prisons locator for anyone sentenced to more than a year.

Sentenced DC felons in federal prisons
A person convicted of a felony under the DC Code and sentenced to more than a year is designated to the federal Bureau of Prisons within weeks of sentencing and can be sent to any federal facility, though the Bureau tries to keep DC Code offenders within 500 miles of the District. The Bureau of Prisons inmate locator lists them by name or register number with the facility and the release date. The United States Parole Commission decides parole for DC Code offenses committed before August 2000 and sets supervised release conditions for later ones.

Guide
What DC inmate records show, and what stays private
The DC Freedom of Information Act, DC Code section 2-531 and following, makes the custody record public: name, DCDC number, facility and status. The Department does not post booking photos or charges in its locator, and the Metropolitan Police Department releases arrest information under its own rules. Medical and mental health records, classification and disciplinary files and Parole Commission case files are exempt. A DC police clearance or criminal history comes from the Metropolitan Police Department's Arrest and Criminal History Section, mainly for the subject, while the Superior Court case search is open to anyone.
Guide
Probation, supervised release and release in the District
The Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency, a federal executive branch agency, supervises everyone on probation, parole or supervised release in the District, and the Pretrial Services Agency supervises defendants released before trial. Neither appears in the DC DOC locator. Release from the DC Jail is posted in VINELink, and release from a federal prison shows in the Bureau of Prisons locator with the release date.
Guide
When the search shows nothing
If the DC Department of Corrections locator shows nothing, search the federal Bureau of Prisons locator, since people convicted of District felonies serve their sentence in federal prisons anywhere in the country. Check the DC Superior Court case search for a pending case, the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency for probation or supervised release, and VINELink for a recent release from the DC Jail.
