All election inquiries, including voter registration status, ballot tracking, and precinct information, can be directed to this office. California residents, including those in the community, can register to vote online at registertovote.ca.gov, the official state portal maintained by the California Secretary of State. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens, California residents, at least 18 years old by Election Day, and not currently serving a state or federal prison term for a felony conviction. Online registration requires a California driver's license or identification card number; those without can submit paper forms available at libraries, post offices, or the Kern County elections office. The voter registration deadline is 15 days before any election. California also offers conditional voter registration, allowing eligible individuals to register and vote during the 14-day period before Election Day and on Election Day itself at designated vote centers or the Kern County elections office. As an unincorporated community, Inyokern conducts no municipal elections for mayor, city council, or local ballot measures. Residents instead vote in county-level elections for the five-member Kern County Board of Supervisors (the area is located in Supervisorial District 1), countywide offices such as Sheriff, District Attorney, Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk, Auditor-Controller, and Treasurer-Tax Collector, as well as state legislative races (California State Assembly and State Senate), statewide constitutional offices (Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, etc.), U.S. House of Representatives (the community is part of California's 20th Congressional District), and U.S. Senate. School governance comes through the Inyokern Elementary School District and other special districts, which hold periodic board elections. Local voters can find their assigned polling place or vote center location using the polling place lookup tool at www.kernvote.com or by calling the Elections Division. California has transitioned to the Voter's Choice Act model in many counties, though Kern County continues to use traditional neighborhood polling places assigned by residential address. Polling locations are open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Election Day. Sample ballots, which include polling place addresses and information on candidates and measures, are mailed to all registered voters approximately three weeks before each election. Precinct-level results for the area and surrounding communities are published on the Kern County elections website after certification. This will be a gubernatorial election year in California, with the Governor's office on the ballot along with other statewide constitutional offices including Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Controller, Treasurer, Insurance Commissioner, and Superintendent of Public Instruction. Kern County will also elect county supervisors in certain districts (on a rotating schedule), as well as various county offices depending on the four-year cycle. Candidate filing periods typically open in February and close in March of the election year; candidate lists and ballot measure text are published at www.kernvote.com once finalized. California offers universal vote-by-mail; all registered voters automatically receive a mail ballot for every election, which can be returned by mail (postage-paid), dropped off at any ballot drop box location throughout Kern County (available 29 days before Election Day), or brought to any polling place or vote center on Election Day. Voters can also choose to vote in person. To request a replacement ballot or additional vote-by-mail materials, contact the Kern County Elections Division or submit a request online at www.kernvote.com. Voted mail ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received within seven days to be counted, or delivered to a drop box or polling location by 8:00 PM on Election Day. Election records in California are largely public under the California Public Records Act and Elections Code. Voter registration lists (excluding confidential voters such as those in address confidentiality programs) are available for purchase for political, journalistic, or research purposes. Campaign finance records, including contributions and expenditures for candidates and ballot measure committees, are searchable through the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) at www.fppc.ca.gov and locally for county candidates through the Kern County Elections Division. Candidate nomination papers, statements of economic interest (Form 700), and ballot arguments are public and available for inspection.
