Kane County is located in the northeastern corner of Illinois and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Its county seat is Geneva. The County was formed out of LaSalle County in 1836.
Kane County is one of the collar counties of the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Its population was estimated at 534,547 in 2019.
Kane County is divided into sixteen townships. The county is also divided into nine towns, including Aurora, Batavia, Elgin, Geneva, St. Charles, South Elgin, and West Dundee.
The county government is led by a Board of County Commissioners, which is composed of twenty-one members. The board is responsible for setting policy and overseeing the county's budget. The county is also served by a County Executive, who is elected by the voters of Kane County.
The county is served by the Kane County Sheriff's Office, which is responsible for law enforcement and corrections. The county is also served by the Kane County State's Attorney's Office, which is responsible for prosecuting criminal cases.
