Pecos County is located in the western part of Texas and is part of the Trans-Pecos region. It is bordered by Reeves County to the north, Ward County to the east, Crockett County to the south, and Jeff Davis and Presidio counties to the west. The county seat is Fort Stockton.
The county is governed by a four-member Commissioners Court, which is composed of the county judge and four commissioners. The county judge is elected county-wide and serves as the presiding officer of the Commissioners Court. The four commissioners are elected by single-member districts.
The county is served by the Pecos County Sheriff's Office. The county is also served by the Pecos County Fire Marshal's Office, which is responsible for fire prevention and investigation.
The county is served by the Pecos County Independent School District, which consists of seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. The county is also served by the Pecos County Library System, which consists of two branches.
