Texas residents can register to vote online through the Texas Secretary of State's website at www.votetexas.gov, or by submitting a completed voter registration application by mail or in person to the Hockley County Elections office. The voter registration deadline in Texas is 30 days before any election. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens, Texas residents, at least 18 years old by Election Day, not finally convicted of a felony (or if convicted, have completed all sentences including probation and parole), and not declared mentally incapacitated by a court. Acceptable forms of ID under Texas law include Texas driver's license, Texas election identification certificate, Texas personal ID card, Texas handgun license, U.S. Military ID card, U.S. Citizenship certificate with photograph, or U.S. Passport. Early voting for county elections typically takes place at the Hockley County Courthouse in Levelland and possibly additional early voting locations depending on the election. Election Day voting occurs at precinct-specific polling places; voters are assigned to a precinct based on their residential address within the community. Under Texas law, voter registration lists are public information available for political purposes, and the Hockley County Elections office maintains these records. Campaign finance reports for county and local candidates are filed with the Hockley County Clerk and Texas Ethics Commission for state-level candidates, with reports available online at www.ethics.state.tx.us. Residents will vote for their Texas State Senator (District 28, which includes Hockley County) and Texas State Representative (District 83). County offices on the ballot in 2026 will include Hockley County Judge, County Commissioners for precincts whose terms expire, County Clerk, District Clerk, County Treasurer, County Tax Assessor-Collector, Sheriff, and Justice of the Peace for various precincts. Judicial positions including District Judges may also appear on the ballot. Primary elections for party nominations typically occur in March, with runoffs if necessary in May, and the general election on the first Tuesday in November. Texas has restricted vote-by-mail eligibility. Absentee voting by mail is available only to voters who are 65 years or older, have a disability or illness, will be out of the county during the entire early voting period and on Election Day, or are confined in jail but otherwise eligible.
