Schuyler County is located in the west-central part of Illinois and is part of the Quincy, IL–MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat is Rushville.

Schuyler County is governed by a seven-member Board of Commissioners. The board is elected from seven districts within the county. The board is responsible for setting policy and overseeing the county's budget.

The county is also served by a state's attorney, sheriff, coroner, and circuit clerk. The county also has a number of elected officials, including a treasurer, assessor, and supervisor of assessments.

The county is served by two school districts: Rushville-Industry Community Unit School District #1 and Brown County Community Unit School District #1.

The county is home to several parks, including the Schuyler County State Fish and Wildlife Area, the Schuyler County Conservation Area, and the Schuyler County Nature Preserve.
