About Sutter County
Sutter County is located in the Sacramento Valley of Northern California, approximately 40 miles north of Sacramento. Established in 1850 as one of California's original 27 counties, it was named after John Sutter, the Swiss immigrant who established Yuba City area's Fort and on whose land gold was discovered in 1848. Sutter County seat is Yuba City, which also is the largest municipality in Sutter County. Sutter County includes approximately 609 square miles and has a population of around 99,000 residents as of recent census estimates. Sutter County is bordered by the Sacramento River to the west and the Feather River to the east, creating a scene dominated by fertile agricultural lands. Major landmarks include Sutter Buttes, the world's smallest complete mountain range, rising dramatically from the valley floor and often called the 'Middle Mountain' by local indigenous peoples. Sutter County's economy is heavily agricultural, with peaches, prunes, walnuts, and rice as major crops. Key government offices include the County Recorder at 463 Second Street, Yuba City, CA 95991; the County Clerk-Recorder at the same address; and the Assessor's Office at 1130 Civic Center Boulevard, Yuba City, CA 95993. What makes Sutter County unique is its blend of agricultural heritage, the geological wonder of the Yuba City area Buttes, significant Sikh and Punjabi cultural influence (home to one of the largest Sikh populations in the United States), and its role as a bedroom community for the greater Sacramento metropolitan area while maintaining its rural character.
