Registration must be postmarked or submitted at least 30 days before an election. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens, Texas residents, at least 18 years old by election day, and not finally convicted of a felony unless they have fully discharged the sentence including incarceration, probation, and parole. Texas does not require voter ID for registration, but voters must present one of seven approved forms of photo ID at the polls: Texas driver's license, election identification certificate, U.S. Passport, military ID, concealed handgun license, U.S. Citizenship certificate with photo, or Texas personal identification card. Early voting is typically conducted at the Oldham County Courthouse in Vega for 12 days before election day, or 17 days for primary elections. In the November 2024 presidential election, Oldham County reported voter turnout of approximately 70-75% of registered voters, with strong Republican performance typical of the Texas Panhandle. County-level results showed over 85% support for Republican candidates. For the November 3, 2026 general election, voters will decide several significant races. Texas does not have a U.S. Senate seat up in 2026, but the entire Texas House of Representatives - all 150 seats - will be on the ballot, including the district representing Oldham County, currently District 88. The Texas Governor's race is not until 2026, as Greg Abbott's current term runs through January 2027, so the ballot will not include a gubernatorial race unless a special election is called. Statewide offices on the 2026 ballot include Texas Attorney General, Comptroller of Public Accounts, Commissioner of the General Land Office, Commissioner of Agriculture, and one Railroad Commissioner position. Several Oldham County offices including Sheriff, County Judge, and various commissioners' positions may be up for election depending on term expirations. Mail-in absentee ballots in Texas are restricted to voters 65 or older, voters who will be out of the county during the entire early voting period and election day, voters confined in jail but eligible to vote, or voters with a disability or illness. Applications must be submitted to the Oldham County Elections Administrator, and the deadline is 11 days before election day, or the close of business the Friday before if applying in person.
