Charlotte County is located in the south-central part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is bordered by the counties of Halifax, Prince Edward, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, and Brunswick. The county seat is Charlotte Court House.

The county is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors, elected from single-member districts. The Board is responsible for setting policy and enacting laws and regulations. The county is also served by a constitutional officer, the Sheriff, who is elected to a four-year term.

Charlotte County is part of the Southside Virginia region and is home to several state parks, including Staunton River State Park and Holliday Lake State Park. The county is also home to the historic Charlotte Court House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
