Citizens, at least 18 by the next general election, and residents of their precinct for at least 30 days before voting. Registration must be completed 29 days before any election. Acceptable identification includes an Indiana driver's license or state ID, though first-time mail registrants may need additional documentation. Because Dubois is an unincorporated community, there are no municipal elections for mayor or city council. Instead, residents participate in county, state, and federal contests. At the Du Bois County level, voters elect commissioners, county council members, sheriff, clerk, auditor, treasurer, recorder, assessor, surveyor, and coroner, plus local school board members and Dubois Township trustees and board members. Polling locations are assigned by precinct, and residents can find their assigned site using the Indiana Voter Portal at indianavoters. gov by entering their name and date of birth or address. The portal also displays sample ballots, early voting sites, and registration status. In the November 2024 general election, Du Bois County saw turnout with approximately 65-70% of registered voters casting ballots, consistent with Indiana's strong participation during presidential years. Looking ahead to the November 3, 2026 general election, voters in the area will decide several important races. Indiana will hold elections for one U.S. Senate seat (Class III, currently held by Todd Young, up for election in 2026 if the cycle holds), all nine U.S. House seats including Indiana's 8th Congressional District which covers Du Bois County, statewide races for Secretary of State, Auditor, and Treasurer, all 100 seats in the Indiana House of Representatives, and 25 of the 50 Indiana State Senate seats. County voters will also elect various county offices that may be up in the 2026 cycle, including potentially county commissioners, county council, and other constitutional offices, depending on term schedules. Indiana does not hold gubernatorial elections in 2026; the next governor's race is in 2024. Absentee voting is available by mail or in-person at Du Bois County Clerk's office. To vote absentee by mail, voters must submit an application to the Du Bois County Clerk by April 21 for the May primary or by October 27 for the November general election, citing one of the statutory reasons such as absence from the county, disability, age 65 or older, working as an election officer, or scheduled work during poll hours. In-person absentee voting (early voting) is available at the Clerk's office and designated satellite locations beginning 28 days before Election Day. Campaign finance reports, candidate filings, and precinct-level election results are public records in Indiana and can be searched through the Indiana Election Division's website at www. gov/sos/elections and the Du Bois County Clerk's office. Voter registration lists are available for purchase by political parties, candidates, and other authorized entities under Indiana Code 3-7-26.
