Illinois Missing Children

A missing child in Illinois is reported to the local police or county sheriff, and the Illinois State Police runs the state's missing persons clearinghouse and, with the Illinois AMBER Alert Task Force, its AMBER Alert plan. Chicago's police department handles more missing child reports than any agency in the state, most of them runaways found within days, and the Illinois State Police issue Endangered Missing Person Advisories for cases that do not meet AMBER criteria.

Illinois has no waiting period to report a missing child, and federal law requires the national database entry within two hours.

Illinois's AMBER Alert is activated by the Illinois State Police at the request of the investigating agency when a child under 18 has been abducted, is in danger of serious harm or death, and there is enough information about the child, the suspect or a vehicle to broadcast. The State Police send the alert to broadcasters through the Illinois Broadcasters Association, the wireless emergency alert system, Department of Transportation and Tollway message signs, the lottery network and social media, and coordinate with Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri and Iowa.

The Illinois State Police Missing Persons clearinghouse maintains the statewide list of missing children and adults with photos, coordinates with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on child cases and with NamUs, and runs the Illinois Child Abduction Response Team program. The report goes to the local police or the county sheriff in Illinois. Get the case number, ask whether the child is in the Law Enforcement Agencies Data System and the National Crime Information Center yet, and call the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children as the next step. Chicago Police's Special Victims Unit handles the city's missing child cases.

Illinois's Endangered Missing Person Advisory covers children and adults in danger without evidence of abduction, and Silver Search, run by the Illinois Department on Aging with the State Police, covers missing seniors with dementia. Case files stay with the investigating agency and can be withheld while the investigation is active under the Freedom of Information Act, while the clearinghouse listing is public.
