Kansas State Court Structure:Kansas' municipal courts have jurisdiction to hear cases involving moving traffic violations, miscellaneous traffic violations, and DWI or DUI matters. Kansas' municipal courts have exclusive jurisdiction to hear cases involving ordinance violations, and other parking violations. Kansas' district courts are its trial courts, with exclusive civil jurisdiction (including civil appeals), and small claims jurisdiction over cases with amounts in controversy of $1,800 or below. District courts have exclusive domestic relations jurisdiction, exclusive felony, misdemeanor, and criminal appeals jurisdiction. District courts have jurisdiction over moving traffic violations, and other miscellaneous traffic violations. It has exclusive juvenile jurisdiction, and provides venue for preliminary hearings. Kansas' courts of appeals have mandatory jurisdiction in civil, criminal, administrative agency, juvenile, original proceeding, and criminal interlocutory decision cases. It has discretionary jurisdiction in civil interlocutory decision cases. Kansas' highest court is the Kansas supreme court. The supreme court has mandatory jurisdiction in civil, criminal, administrative agency, disciplinary, certified questions from federal courts, and original proceeding cases. It has discretionary jurisdiction in civil, criminal, administrative agency, juvenile, original proceeding, and interlocutory decision cases.
