Kingsbury County is governed by a three-member Board of County Commissioners. The board is elected at-large and serves four-year terms. The county also has an elected Auditor, Treasurer, Register of Deeds, States Attorney, and Sheriff.
Kingsbury County is located in the east-central part of South Dakota. It is bordered by Deuel County to the north, Brookings County to the east, Moody County to the south, and Miner County to the west. The county seat is De Smet. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,148. The county was created in 1873 and is named for George W. Kingsbury, a Dakota Territory legislator. The county is home to the Kingsbury State Game Production Area, which is managed by the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks.
