South Otselic, New York Public Records

Residents can register to vote online at www.elections.ny.gov using the New York State Voter Registration Online Application, by mail using a printable registration form available from the same website or from the county Board of Elections, or in person at the Board of Elections office, county DMV offices, or various state agencies. New York requires voter registration at least 25 days before an election; online registration closes at the same deadline. To register, applicants must be U.S. Citizens, at least 18 years old by the election date, residents of Chenango County and the Town of Otselic, and not currently incarcerated for a felony conviction. Valid New York State driver's license or DMV-issued ID number is required for online registration; those without can register by mail or in person providing the last four digits of their Social Security number. As an unincorporated town, South Otselic holds town elections for Town Supervisor, Town Council members (Town Board), Town Clerk, Highway Superintendent, and Town Justice positions. These local elections typically occur in odd-numbered years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The next town elections will take place in November 2025 and November 2027. Residents also vote for Chenango County offices including County Legislature representatives, County Clerk, Sheriff, District Attorney, and County Coroner, generally in odd-numbered years. The community typically has one or two polling locations depending on district boundaries; historically the South Otselic Town Hall has served as a polling site. Under New York Election Law, certain election records are public. Voter registration lists are available for purchase by candidates and political committees for campaign purposes only; individual voter registration status can be verified through the Board of Elections. Election results by election district are published after certification. Campaign finance disclosure reports for candidates and committees are filed with and available from the New York State Board of Elections at www.elections.ny.gov/CampaignFinance.html. Candidate petitions and certificates of nomination are public records available at the Board of Elections. In the November 2024 presidential election, Chenango County reported approximately 13,500 votes cast out of roughly 27,000 registered voters, representing approximately 50% turnout. The county has historically leaned Republican in presidential and statewide races, though local elections can be competitive. Looking ahead to the November 3, 2026 general election, South Otselic and Chenango County voters will decide multiple important races. At the federal level, New York will not have a U.S. Senate race in 2026 (New York's Senate seats are up in 2024 and 2028), but all of New York's U.S. House seats will be contested, including New York's 19th Congressional District which includes Chenango County. At the state level, Governor Kathy Hochul's term expires in 2026, making the gubernatorial race a major contest; all 63 New York State Senate seats and all 150 State Assembly seats will also be on the ballot, including the seats representing the area (currently State Senate District 51 and Assembly District 122, subject to redistricting). At the Chenango County level, 2026 is an even-numbered year when county executive and legislative seats may appear depending on term schedules; voters should check with the Board of Elections for the specific local races. New York offers absentee voting for any voter who will be absent from the county on Election Day, unable to appear due to illness or disability, or has a temporary or permanent illness or disability preventing polling place access. Absentee ballot applications are available at www.elections.ny.gov or from the Chenango County Board of Elections. Applications must be received by the Board of Elections at least seven days before the election if requesting mail delivery of the ballot, or the day before the election if picking up the ballot in person. Completed absentee ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received by the Board of Elections within seven days after the election, or delivered in person by 9:00 PM on Election Day. New York also offers early voting at designated locations for nine days before Election Day; early voting sites for Chenango County are announced before each election and typically include locations in Norwich and possibly other county locations.
