Voter registration in Minnesota offers considerable flexibility for Waseca residents.
Registration can be completed online at mnvotes.sos.state.mn.us, by mail using a voter registration application, or in person at the County Auditor's office. The state also permits same-day voter registration at polling places on Election Day and during early voting periods, making this one of the most accessible registration systems in the country. To qualify, applicants must be U.S. Citizens, at least 18 years old on Election Day, residents of Minnesota for 20 days, and have completed any felony sentence. Pre-registration must be completed at least 21 days before an election to receive a voter card by mail, though same-day registration remains an option. Acceptable proof of residence includes a Minnesota driver's license, state ID, current utility bill, bank statement, or other documents showing name and current address. City elections in Waseca are nonpartisan and include the offices of Mayor and City Council members. The Mayor serves a four-year term, while Council members serve four-year staggered terms representing wards and at-large positions. Municipal elections take place in November of odd-numbered years, with the most recent held in November 2023 and the next scheduled for November 2027. City candidates file with the Waseca City Clerk at City Hall, 306 N. State Street. Local ballot questions, charter amendments, or referenda may also appear on municipal election ballots. Residents can find their assigned polling place using the Polling Place Finder at pollfinder.sos.state.mn.us by entering their address. The city is divided into several precincts, each assigned to specific polling locations including Waseca Intermediate School, city offices, and other public buildings. Polling places are open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Election Day. Minnesota's election records rank among the most transparent in the nation. Voter registration lists are public data and can be requested from county election offices. Campaign finance reports for candidates and committees are filed with the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board and searchable at cfb.mn.gov. Candidate filings for federal, state, and county offices are public, as are precinct-level election results, all available through the Secretary of State and county websites. In the November 2024 general election, Waseca County reported approximately 67-70% voter turnout, with roughly 8,000-9,000 ballots cast from approximately 12,000 registered voters. Like much of rural southern Minnesota, the county showed strong support for Republican candidates in federal and state races, though local races remained nonpartisan. Looking ahead to November 3, 2026 (the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November), Waseca voters will decide several important races. At the federal level, Minnesota's U.S. Senate seat currently held by Tina Smith will be on the ballot (Class II, elected 2026). All of Minnesota's eight U.S. House seats will also be contested; Waseca is located in Minnesota's 1st Congressional District. At the state level, Minnesota does elect its Governor in 2026, as the state holds gubernatorial elections every four years with the last in 2022. All 134 Minnesota House seats and approximately half of the 67 Minnesota Senate seats will be contested. At the Waseca County level, various Waseca County offices including County Commissioners, Sheriff, Auditor-Treasurer, Recorder, and Attorney will appear on the ballot depending on term cycles. City of Waseca offices are elected in odd-numbered years, so no municipal races will appear in 2026. Minnesota offers multiple options for voting before Election Day. Absentee voting (also called early voting or no-excuse absentee) is available to all registered voters beginning 46 days before an election. Residents can request an absentee ballot online at mnvotes.sos.state.mn.us, by mail, or in person at the Waseca County Auditor's office. In-person absentee voting at the Waseca County office allows voters to request a ballot, vote, and return it in one visit. Mail-in absentee ballots must be requested by the week before Election Day and received by Election Day (postmarks do not count) to be counted. Minnesota does not require an excuse to vote absentee, making it convenient for anyone who prefers to vote early.
