Wyoming County Public Records, questions
Are county records public information?
Yes. The Wyoming Public Records Act, W.S. 16-4-201 and following, opens county records, with a Public Records Ombudsman to handle complaints, and court, county clerk and assessor records are open. Wyoming is a closed record state for vital records: birth records open to the public after 100 years and death records after 50 years, and until then they go only to entitled parties such as the registrant, parents, legal guardians and attorneys. Juvenile and sealed court files are closed.
How much do certified copies cost?
A certified Wyoming birth certificate costs $25, and a death certificate $25 for the first copy and $20 for each additional copy; marriage and divorce certificates from Vital Records Services are $25 each. County clerks issue one certified marriage copy within 60 days of the ceremony, $5.50 in Campbell County, and Sweetwater County charges $30 for a marriage license. Public records copying fees follow the procedures published by the Department of Administration and Information.
Can I search county records online?
The Wyoming Judicial Branch offers online case search for the Supreme Court, while district and circuit court records are obtained from the clerk of each court. County clerks record deeds and land records, with online search in most counties, and assessors post parcel data. Vital records are ordered through the Wyoming VSS online portal or by mail to Vital Records Services in Cheyenne, not searched.
What identification do I need?
Open records need no ID. Wyoming vital records applications must be notarized or accompanied by identification, and only entitled parties may order: for a birth record the registrant if of legal age, either parent named on the certificate, a lawyer representing either party or a legal guardian with certified papers. Death records are limited to family until 50 years have passed.
How long does it take to receive records?
Vital Records Services fills VSS portal and mailed orders after receipt and mails the certificates, and county clerks issue marriage copies in person. Supreme Court case search and county clerk lookups are immediate.
