Applicants must be U.S. Citizens, Virginia residents, at least 18 years old by the next general election, and provide either a Virginia driver's license number, the last four digits of their Social Security number, or other identification. While Virginia doesn't require voter ID for registration, voters must present acceptable photo identification when voting in person, or alternatively, sign a statement confirming their identity. As an unincorporated community, Moon holds no municipal elections for mayor or town council. Residents participate in county, state, and federal contests. Mathews County is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors elected by district to four-year staggered terms. Residents can find their assigned polling location using the Virginia Department of Elections' polling place lookup tool at https://vote.elections.virginia.gov/ by entering their address. The county typically operates several precincts throughout the area for Election Day voting, with early voting available at the Mathews County Registrar's office for the 45 days preceding any election The county has approximately 7,500 registered voters. Virginia election records available to the public include voter registration lists (with restrictions on use), campaign finance reports filed by candidates and political committees (searchable at https://apps.elections.virginia.gov/SBE_CSV/CF/), candidate filings and statements of qualification, and precinct-level election results. These records are maintained by both the Mathews County registrar and the Virginia Department of Elections. Virginia will hold elections for all 100 House of Delegates seats, as delegates serve two-year terms. Local residents vote for the delegate representing the 72nd House District. 2026 is not a U.S. Senate election year for Virginia (next in 2026 for Warner's seat expiring 2027, and 2024 was Kaine's re-election).Current federal, state, and local election schedules, ballot contests, candidate filings, and certified results for Moon voters are published by the Virginia Department of Elections (https://www.elections.virginia.gov/). Voters will also decide county constitutional officer positions that may be on the ballot, and any local school board seats if applicable. Virginia offers absentee voting both in-person (early voting) and by mail. Any registered voter may vote absentee without providing a reason. Mail-in absentee ballot applications can be submitted online at https://vote.elections.virginia.gov/, by mail, email, or fax to the Mathews County registrar. The application deadline is 11 days before the election (5 p.m.). Completed absentee ballots must be returned by 7 p.m. On Election Day, either by mail (postmarked by Election Day and received by noon the Friday after the election, though voters are encouraged to mail ballots earlier) or delivered in person to the registrar's office or designated drop-off locations. In-person early voting is available at the Mathews County registrar's office for 45 days before any election, including Saturdays, with no excuse required.
