Residents can register to vote online through the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal at www.elections.virginia.gov/citizen-portal, where first-time registrants with a Virginia driver's license or DMV-issued identification card can complete the entire process online. Virginia's voter registration deadline falls 22 days before any election. Acceptable identification for registration includes a Virginia driver's license number, the last four digits of a Social Security number, or a copy of acceptable photo ID or other documentation showing name and address. As an unincorporated community without municipal government, North holds no city council, mayoral, or town elections of its own. Instead, residents vote in county-wide contests for the Mathews County Board of Supervisors (five members elected by district), Constitutional Officers (Sheriff, Commissioner of the Revenue, Treasurer, Commonwealth's Attorney, and Clerk of Circuit Court), and School Board members. Virginia maintains extensive public election records: voter registration lists (excluding confidential information such as SSN and full birth dates) can be purchased from the State Board of Elections; campaign finance reports for state and local candidates are searchable online through the Virginia Department of Elections Campaign Finance system at https://apps.elections.virginia.gov/SBE_CSV/CF; candidate filings and ballot information are available through the Department of Elections and the local registrar's office; and precinct-level election results are published by the State Board and posted by the county Electoral Board after certification. However, Virginia voters will decide a U.S. County voters will elect Board of Supervisors members whose terms expire in 2026, along with any constitutional officers scheduled for election that year (most serve four-year terms).
