The county was created in 1833 and was organized in 1859. It is named after Champaign County, Ohio, which in turn was named for the French word for "open level country".

The county is home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Parkland College, and several other higher education institutions. It is also home to several major employers, including the Carle Foundation Hospital, the University of Illinois, and the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District.
