Dunklin County is located in the southeastern corner of Missouri and is part of the Bootheel region. The county seat is Kennett. The county was officially organized on February 14, 1845.

The county is part of the Kennett, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Cape Girardeau-Jackson, MO-IL Combined Statistical Area.

Dunklin County is governed by a three-member County Commission, which is elected in staggered four-year terms. The County Commission is responsible for setting the budget, levying taxes, and making policy decisions. Other elected officials include the Sheriff, Prosecuting Attorney, Assessor, Collector, and Public Administrator.

Dunklin County is primarily an agricultural area, with cotton, soybeans and rice being the leading crops. The county is also known as the “Groundhog Capital of the World” because of the abundance of groundhogs in the region.

Other important industries in Dunklin County include coal mining and manufacturing. The county is also home to a number of historic sites, including Mastodon State Historic Site, the Higgerson School Historic Site, and the historic Butler-Dunham House.
