Merced County is located in the Central Valley of California and is the 10th most populous county in the state. The county seat is Merced. The county is home to the University of California, Merced, the first research university to be built in the U.S. in the 21st century.

The county is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors, who are elected by district. The Board of Supervisors is responsible for setting policy and enacting laws and regulations.
