Rio Arriba County is located in the northern part of New Mexico and is the fifth largest county in the state. The county seat is Tierra Amarilla. As of the 2010 census, the population was 40,246.
Rio Arriba County is governed by a five-member Board of County Commissioners. The current commissioners are:
1. The Santa Fe Trail, a major trade route between Missouri and New Mexico, passed through Rio Arriba County in the early 1800s.
2. The first Spanish settlement in the area was established in 1598 by Don Juan de Oñate.
3. In 1821, Mexico declared its independence from Spain, and Rio Arriba County became part of the newly formed Mexican state of Nuevo Mexico.
4. In 1846, the U.S. declared war on Mexico and captured Santa Fe. Rio Arriba County became part of the U.S. Territory of New Mexico.
5. In 1912, the county seat of Tierra Amarilla was the site of a dramatic shootout between a posse of local citizens and a group of armed revolutionaries led by Mexican revolutionary leader Pancho Villa.
