Rio Grande County offices and records
Courts. Rio Grande County is in the Twelfth Judicial District with Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral and Saguache counties. The district court (felonies, larger civil cases, family, probate and juvenile matters) and the county court (misdemeanors, traffic and small claims) both sit at the courthouse in Del Norte, and their records are kept by the clerk of court there, part of the Colorado Judicial Branch. Statewide dockets are published by the Judicial Branch.
Property records. Deeds, deeds of trust, liens and plats are recorded by the Rio Grande County Clerk and Recorder in Del Norte. Ownership, assessed values and property characteristics are kept by the Rio Grande County Assessor, with an online property search, and property tax bills and payments are handled by the Treasurer, who also serves as Public Trustee for foreclosures.
Sheriff and jail. The Rio Grande County Sheriff's Office in Del Norte polices the unincorporated county, serves civil process and runs the county jail. Custody and booking information comes from the Sheriff. Monte Vista, Del Norte and Center have their own police departments for city cases.
Vital records. Birth and death certificates are issued locally through Rio Grande County and statewide by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Marriage licenses come from the Clerk and Recorder, and divorce decrees are part of the district court files in Del Norte.
Elections and county offices. The Rio Grande County Clerk and Recorder registers voters, mails ballots and publishes election results, with statewide registration through GoVoteColorado.gov. County departments, commissioner meetings and public records requests go through Rio Grande County in Del Norte.
