Are county records public information?
Yes. The Colorado Open Records Act, C.R.S. 24-72-201 to 206, opens county records to inspection, and custodians must respond within three working days, which can be extended seven more in extenuating circumstances. Court files, deeds and assessor data are open; juvenile and sealed court files, criminal justice records covered by a separate act, and vital records are the main exceptions, with Colorado birth certificates restricted for 100 years.
How much do certified copies cost?
A certified Colorado birth or death certificate costs $20 for the first copy and $13 for each additional copy ordered at the same time, and a marriage or divorce verification from the state is $17. Online orders add a VitalChek surcharge, $7.50 in Larimer County. For Open Records Act copies the Department of Local Affairs, for example, charges 25 cents a page and $30 an hour after the first two hours of staff time, and county clerks set statutory fees for deed copies.
Can I search county records online?
Colorado court records are available through the Judicial Branch's paid Data Access service and the free docket search on coloradojudicial.gov; Denver County Court cases are kept in Denver's own system. Each county clerk and recorder posts an online index of deeds, deeds of trust and plats, and county assessors publish parcel records. Birth and death certificates are not searchable online; they are ordered from a county vital records office or the state by appointment, mail or VitalChek.
What identification do I need?
Open records need no ID. A Colorado birth or death certificate requires a copy of your identification and proof of eligibility, since only the person named, immediate family members and legal representatives may order one. Walk-in service at the state office is by appointment only, and county vital records offices follow the same ID rules.
How long does it take to receive records?
Online orders at the state Vital Records office take about 30 business days, while county offices are much faster: Larimer County processes applications in 2 to 5 business days and many county offices issue certificates in person. The CBI Internet Criminal History Check returns a Colorado name-based record instantly for $6 per result, and recorded document searches are immediate.
